God will be revealed in a multitude of ways
Dear People of Grace,
Happy New Year and a continued Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!
Each year I try my hardest to extend the Christmas season as long as possible. By my estimation, the Three Magi are still en route to Bethlehem following that star to the Christ child!
As we turn the corner toward a promising 2011, we will have much to celebrate. On January 2nd the bells of New Year 2011 will still be ringing as we celebrate the Second Sunday of Christmas with one service at 10 am. If you are around in the morning on either January 5th and 6th, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany at our Monthly Day School Chapel Eucharist and at our weekly service of Holy Eucharist on Thursday. On Sunday, January 9th, we’ll have a very festive Feast of the Baptism of Jesus as we baptize three babies and tell the story of the Nativity of Christ with our annual Epiphany Pageant.
Looking further into the month of January, on the fourth Sunday of the Month (January 23rd to be exact) we will hold our 167th Annual Meeting. This year we will be electing a warden and three members of the vestry, and following the business we will eat! I have always found these occasions to be not only Spirit-filled, but also a hands-on way to strengthen our faith community.
As you can see, we have only so long to rest; for we have much to do for the sake of the Gospel in the coming year. Just as we think we have caught up on all our work to do, God calls us to go just a little further. I hope in this season of Epiphany that God is revealed to you in new and mysterious ways. Just as the image of Jesus in the manger on Christmas Eve is a different one from the image of the boy being visited by the Magi; and just the image of the young man being baptized in the River Jordan is different from all others—God will be revealed in a multitude of ways. Thanks be to God who is so willing to reveal Himself to us and who is willing to put us to work in order to do God’s will.
May we have eyes to see God in these new ways and may our hands be willing to carry on the work of our Lord. I remain faithfully,
Your rector and friend,
(The Rev.) Joshua D. Walters
