The Vestry wishes to announce the selection of the Rev. Joshua D. Walters as the 7th rector of Grace Church, Massapequa. He will begin his ministry in November of 2009. An Indiana native, Josh grew up on a farm that has been in his family since the 1850s and completed undergraduate studies at Indiana University-Bloomington, majoring in history with a minor in English literature. It was during his time at Indiana University that Josh was received into the Episcopal Church from the Presbyterian Church and began to discern his call to ordained ministry.
Josh is a 2006 graduate of the General Theological Seminary in New York City where he served for two years as the seminarian at Grace Church, Brooklyn Heights. He was ordained to the priesthood in January 2007 by the Rt. Rev. Catherine Waynick, Bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis. Following graduation from General Seminary, Josh served as curate and then as associate rector of Christ Church in Winnetka, Illinois, in the Diocese of Chicago. His passions in ministry lie in teaching, preaching, visiting with parishioners of all ages, and welcoming newcomers.
“With God’s love and grace our time together will bear much fruit as we work to welcome newcomers, broaden our faith and reach out to the wider community in order to Grow the Church, Form the Faithful, and Change the World! “ stated Rev. Walters. “It is truly an honor to be called as the rector of your parish.”
Josh and Emily were married in 2003 and are the proud parents of James (2) and Eleanor (3 weeks). Josh’s hobbies include hiking; walking their beloved beagle-mutt, Murphy; swimming; reading at the beach; cooking; and relaxing with family and friends. Both he and Emily have high hopes of eventually planting a vegetable garden in the backyard of their new home.
The Vestry wishes to thank the members of the Search Committee for all their efforts during the past few months. They are to be commended for their outstanding recommendation.
